Hola!
I am writing from yet another thunderstorm happening outside ou hotel here in Liberia. It's crazy!
Yesterday our group explored the estuary outside the national park. We saw so many crabs ans birds, but no crocodiles :-( It was hot and humid, but canoeing around the estuary was well worth the effort, especially because we got to see a group of howler monkeys on the way back!
After the canoe trip we went to a talk led by the leatherback trust. This organization has partnered up with the National Park to protect the nesting of sea turtles and to do research on the five turtle species present at the park. Although I wish I would have seen a turtle, I respect and support the areas limitations due to nesting. In fact, the national park closes down the beach at 6 to give the turtles the proper conditions for a healthy habitat. However, we also got to talk to Luis, the owner of the hotel we were staying at and self proclaimed conservationist. He gave us a very different take on the survivability of these sea turtles. Luis believes that conservation techniques have not been on parr with the needed protection of the sea turtles, painting a very gloomy picture for the future of the animals.
Today is our last day. We got some free time to explore the beach, and now we are wrapping up our program. I'm about to head to dimmer and prepare myself for the long trip ahead!
Pura Vida!
